Rudy Giuliani Can't Go On Trial, He Has An Inauguration To Attend
He's got a new lawyer, and that guy is TRYIN' IT.
When Rudy Giuliani’s lawyers moved to withdraw last week from the collection suit filed by Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, we crossed our fingers and made a little wish that America’s Mayor would wind up representing himself pro se. It’s not like this thing could go worse with Rudy at the wheel. And think of the amazing copy it would generate!
Sadly, it was not meant to be. Just hours later, a new lawyer entered his appearance for Giuliani, who is currently trying to avoid paying the $148 million he owes to the two former Atlanta poll workers he defamed.
But when God closes a door, she opens a window. And through it climbed one Joseph Cammarata, a Staten Island divorce lawyer willing to travel to Manhattan to tell US District Judge Lewis Liman what’s what.
If that name sounds familiar it’s because the lawyer who represented Paula Jones in her sexual harassment suit against Bill Clinton was also named Joseph Cammarata. And that guy is very hot to let everyone know this guy ain’t him.
This Cammarata hopes to swap in for attorneys Ken Caruso and David Labkowski who at first moved to withdraw entirely under seal. But when Judge Lewis Liman nixed that plan, they were forced to admit on the public docket that they’re pulling the ripcord pursuant to Rule 1.16 of the New York Rules of Professional Conduct which allows an attorney to terminate representation when a client “insists upon presenting a claim or defense that is not warranted under existing law.”
Counsel for Freeman and Moss demanded that Rudy’s lawyers stick around long enough to resolve several contested discovery matters. But Caruso and Labkowski insist that they definitely cannot do that and they definitely cannot say why without prejudicing Rudy’s case:
